The number of jobs for couriers is projected to decrease over the next 5 to 10 years. Couriers pick up and deliver important business documents, packages and parts that need to be sent or received quickly within a local area. Couriers also deliver items that the sender cannot reliably transport through other means due to time or temperature concerns, such as medical supplies, blood, machine parts, and even organs for transplant. Many courier companies also provide additional non-first mile/last mile delivery services to their customers ranging from logistics management, archive warehousing, messenger centers, outsourced mailroom services and coordinated airfreight forwarding delivery services. What does the average courier company look like? Courier companies are most often regional, small businesses that have a long history of positive influence in their communities. They are typically the primary income stream for about 25 individuals who receive good salaries and company benefits. These employees coordinate and utilize up to three times as many independent owner-operator contract drivers annually. Many industries depend upon the customer-driven model of the courier industry, including pharmaceutical distributors, pharmacies, payroll companies, the magazine industry, biomedical labs, manufacturing, parts distributors, law firms and financial centers.
